Everyone has noticed the huge amount of open source CMS’s available right now. My question is what about Flash? Doesn’t it get an open source CMS? I have been thinking about going to work on one with our team, but want to test the interest users like you would have in something like this. Leave a comment and let us know how you feel about it.
I think it’s a sweet idea. It is a bit overwhelming for the Flash developer to undertake the entire process on their own. It would be great even if the CMS was more of a skeleton that could be styled independently, but that contained a base architecture for a rich system.
MySQL -> PHP -> Flash
- Flash/JS detection with an alternate PHP “echo” for search engines
- History and deep-linking
- XML recordsets consumed by btoh the Flash CMS and the PHP alternate
Just my thoughts.
A Flash CMS would be incredibly useful as for the most part the inability of the client changing anything themselves without a prior knowledge of Flash has resulted in many declining a site using Flash.
It would be great if someone would seriously make an OpenSource CMS for flash. I guess many, many flash developers are really interested in something like this, cause most clients want to be able to edit their website; text, photos, video etc. Good luck!
I think tis a great idea. It’s just a real shame that no one else has bothered to leave a comment about it. Were you thinking something similar to that found on flash loaded?
Thanks for all of the feedback! This has pushed my interest in this project up to the front of our list. I am finishing up some big projects right now, but I think I will have enough time in a couple of months (May -June 07) to start on something like this. Let us know if anyone else is interested in helping on the project.
I have been wanting to work on a flash CMS ever since I saw Drupal. But as I feel we all know, it would be a daunting task with flash. I have built flash cms’s before for clients, but they only have the ability to update the content (text, photos, video), but not the way the page is laid out and therefore, no total control. I don’t know if anyone has seen some of the things abode has put on their labs site as of late, but two big things that have given me the most promise for a realistic flash cms, is the flex integration kit for flash cs3 and the flex module for apache / ISS. This has got me thinking. You could create the modules/widgets in flash, export them as .swc files for use in flex (which by default has a layout manager), and then use the flex module to create the pages in real time just as php does. I suppose also you could do the skins in flash as well, and of course, you can still use Mysql for the DB. This is an early stage thought, but I hope it helps. Also, I would love to help on the project because I agree with Benjamin, flash sites are still the underdog because so many people don’t know the power and flexibility of flash and still assume it is inaccessible to users and search engines. Though we all know, with projects like progressive enhancement, the unfocus history project, and many other projects like these have changed all that. Unfortunately, your average web browser has no idea about these advancements in flash-friendliness…
i am currently working on a fully featured flash cms that does not require a db installation. ive been working on it for a year thanks to the absolute lack of documentation to create something like this. and i am quite surprised there are not a million and one flash cms programs out there already but…. getting ready to post some screenshots on my site luxedesignnyc.com; its going to be fully featured including seo optimized via backend output, for now the program is designed to meet the needs of most of my clients who are artists and designers. the frontend is completely free of any requirements from the cms actually so you just are attaching actions to things and putting them where ever you want. backend has a gorgeous silver interface easily changeable in flash without layers of nesting symbols and so on… im a designer in ny and i require a flash cms because my clients are too impatient. now i can template some of my site designs and rapidly get clients templated websites running for them in a timely manner. im also sick of css and i want to use flash for everything now. im not comfortable releasing open source mainly due to the large number of bad templates people will develop for the system. also the thought of good projects going down the drain from something like this would suck. what i want ideally is a base of users/developers who are great designers and know what they are doing. if you are so excited you cant stand it, do feel free to email me from my site.
